As features in modern RTS games evolved, I can’t help but ask this question- do the fundamental mechanics still apply in RTS games?

Do unit management down to individual units still hold up? These are questions that needs answers.

Absolutely! Old fashion mechanics are still present. StarCraft and Age of Empires showed that the game which has the least of the complications is probably the best one. The basic fundamentals of an RTS game don’t rely so much on innovation. Some of these mechanics have worked for years. I also believe that a simplified control structure gives the player direct strategic experience.

Old fashion mechanics of RTS is still very relevant to the game because it's recently that new modern mechanics are being introduced to the game. Yes, they are good but the old orthodox mechanics will not easily be discarded.

Traditional approaches are always valuable, but change is even more important. They Are Billions and Northgard are a mix of the traditional and new RTS mechanics. The real world, multiple factions, and AI make it fun. This is more like, there need to move forward but at the same time, we need to remember our beginnings. The best RTS games I have seen are mid-way between old and the new game features.
