Having different factions to play in RTS games brings so much variety into the game. It helps to add more unique gameplay to it that's going to end with different results based on what you choose to play.

I've seen some RTS games with 2 or 3 factions and some with 4 factions. For example, Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness is a classic RTS that have only two main factions which is the Humans and Orcs.

How many factions do you think is ideal in RTS games?

The ideal number of factions depends on whether the developer wants to achieve balance, variety, or both.

Personally, I think four is ideal, but that 3 to 5 factions is a sweet spot. With three factions, developers can ensure distinct play styles while maintaining competitive balance. This makes it much easier for players to learn the strengths and weaknesses of each faction and to get into the game.

Adding four or five introduces more diversity in strategy and gameplay, but without overwhelming players.

However, too many factions can lead to complexity and balance issues, which can can dilute unique faction identities and complicate balance between the different factions.

On the other end of the Spectrum, I find too few factions can limit replayability because of the lack of diversity. This reduces interest in the game once I learn everything I can about the two to three factions available.

I think two to four fractions should be enough so as not to confuse gamers, especially those who are still new to the world of RTS games.
