How Important Is Base Placement in Stronghold Games?

Have you played any of the Stronghold Games? Well, this is one of the RTS game series that I am taking a lot of interest of late. In Stronghold, base placement seems to play a big role in resource gathering and defense. If you have played the games, I would like to know if there are specific tips or locations that I need to emphasize on while building a base for both long-term success and security.

The position of the base is a rather crucial factor in Stronghold. Try and find a location where there are materials such as timber, marble, and metal. Other barriers such as river or cliffs are also ideal too. Staying near these materials can help provide security when constructing a building.
