You will agree with me that RTS games require way more intellectual exercise than the average first person shooter games.
Players often need to use their brains 100x more when playing games like AoE, Total Annihilation, Command and Conquer, etc than the other regular games.
So can we say that RTS games require a higher IQ to play?

I would agree that the higher the IQ the better it's going to be for the player. But it doesn't mean someone who's playing with a lower IQ isn't going to do well in the games too.

Based on some of the thick fucks I have dealt with online I'd say no.

It would help understand what is going on in the game, but not needed to have fun and just enjoy it the way you wish to play it.

I think you’ll be at an advantage if you're more intelligent. But you can still play at a casual level. But in most cases, you need to be very intelligent.

Well, I see your point, and agree that RTS games demand a lot of strategic thinking, planning, and multitasking compared to FPS games. However, I wouldn’t say they necessarily require a higher IQ. Actually, it is more about practice, experience, and understanding the game mechanics.

Hmmm, I have seen a lot of people who are good at FPS games but struggle to hold their ground when playing RTS. Could it be that they are not doing the strategic thinking enough?

Different games need different set of skills, FPS games are all about spontaneous action, however, RTS need strategic planning and execution. Strategy is more of making a plan and executing the plan rather than thinking alone.

You need to be at your very best when playing any game including real time strategy games. Being strategic with management and planning takes a lot of high IQ to achieve that. It's why I believe it's needed to excel in playing RTS games.

Right. So IQ is very important in RTS games as it helps in critical thinking.

Yes, there's no arguments about it from my perspective. You need to be smart with deciding on your strategy when playing any RTS games. With a high IQ, it serves you better.

This is a classic question in RTS community, you can see people discussing everywhere from Reddit and Quora to indie forums. But I do not think you need higher IQ to become a good RTS players.

A veteran gamer also told me that if it requires a higher IQ to play RTS games, then we would be having a lower number of RTS gamers today.

No doubt that this type of game are quite challenging. This is because they require players to reason and find their ways round a problem. Players have to allocate resources, rank the objectives and coordinate them, and learn to respond to changes. This needs thinking ability such as decision making and planning.
