I think the RTS games with some RPG elements are good and it's quite creative.
I believe such combinations will bring the strategic and character development in a different kind of way to the RTS games. Basically, it lets you make strategic choices. I’m curious, do RPG elements add value or do they kill the game?

Personally, I believe that it's a good thing to the RTS games if they are very well integrated to make the game whole. Such integration of RTS and RPG mechanics have the potential of creating deep and engaging gameplay if it's very well executed.

There seems to be a pretty big rift in the RTS community between people who like hero units and people who hate them. For me, they've always just seemed to make the gameplay experience a little more clunky. For immersion and the single player experience, I'm all for RPG elements added in, but I don't like playing with RPG elements competitively.

One game that I think does a good job with the RTS/RPG fusion is SpellForce 3. The fun gameplay outweighs the clunkiness of the RPG elements for me.

RPG elements bring relevance and replayability to the game. For instance StarCraft II is a strong examples but I have to say that moderation is important when doing such a combination.

I totally disagree because RPG components are a distraction to the game mechanics because of the unnecessary features added. It will kill the strategy and skill aspects of the game. It’s therefore evident that RTS games must focus on strategy not personality customization.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of hero units. I prefer my RTS games to be a little more grounded in 'realism'.

I like RTS games and I also like RPG, however, I like to keep these two genres separate. There is a fun in playing different genres and it can be overwhelming if you create a mixture of different things.
