What elements does Dawn of war bring to the RTS genre?

I have come across a lot of RTS gamers who have referred to Dawn of War as a good game to try several times. While I am yet to play it, it got me a little curious. What makes Dawn of War a good RTS game? What elements does it bring to the RTS genre in general?
