It's very... thematic technology, not practical, 'hard scifi' technology especially when you then bring the force into it. Rule of cool seems to be a core philosophy in the force that affects regular stuff. Really it's more a vessel for a mixed straight fantasy story.

The technology has never really stood up to any scrutiny and I don't believe that it was supposed to either. It's more science fantasy than science fiction.
