The Chosen stuff reminds me of AI. Well, many people are suspicious that AI will become tyrannical over humans. Well, the Terminator series of films revolved around that theme.

The Chosen are not AI. They're 'digital humans'. Humans who have uploaded their consciousness and are now immortal. The closest iteration to AI in Sanctuary is The Guard. The Guard are probably not quite AI; they're not a sentient race, but instead created by Ra to defend the sphere from EDA and Chosen aggression.

Whenever I think of The Chosen, The Matrix is the first thing I think of and feel is the one thing that would help me explain them to someone who does not know about Shattered Sun.

Chosen are neither AI nor digital, they are still "humans" with a physical brain that works the same as regular one, but was converted into a synthetic one which is better in every way and doesn't age. Their consciousness is still housed inside the brain, and if you destroy it, the Chosen will die.
