This, this, is really interesting as a game feature. The ability to deform the ground units travel across or to split the ground and cause your enemy to fall into the sun is - just imagining it - EPIC. I can't wait to see how it manifests. I believe that "Dyson sphere crust shattering" is a stretch goal:

In the very final stages of the game, split the earth, destroy the very ground on which you stand and watch your foes fall into the sun below.

...but imagine seeing that happen. Great chasms being opened up in the very fabric of the sphere. Weaponised geography. I really hope this features.
 
This is set to be a visual masterpiece, but ignoring that there are also fresh gameplay going on. By punching a whole in the terrain you are changing pathfinding. For example you could use this weapon just to destroy a chokepoint, sealing off a section of the map, cutting off a retreat or preventing enemy units from reaching you. Terrain shattering is something we are very excited about.
 
Terrain shattering is something which I am excited about! Too often terrain is a static, unchanging feature of a game. If this happens it'll give terrain almost a personality of it's own you'll have to factor in to strategic/tactical considerations. Do keep us informed. :D
