Something has been bugging me for a while, and watching some recent footage, it finally clicked. A Dyson sphere is constructed around the sun and you live on the INNER surface (sun above you), not the outside. It's not like you just made a big planet with a star inside and live on it like you would on a natural world. If you lived on the outside, there would be no light because you covered up the sun. If you blow a hole in the surface, it should open to empty space, not the star. This is what was bugging me every time I saw a gap in the surface or a super weapon blowing a hole.

That's a fair question. The official answer is that there are holes in the sphere and mirrors orbiting it which reflect light down onto the surface for both heat and light.
