How Do I Defend Against Early-Game Rushes in Supreme Commander?

I heard that using the terrain to my advantage in Supreme Commander can change the tide of the game. But I'm still learning how I can do that more effectively. It's imperative for me to learn how to leverage hills, valleys, and other natural features to outmaneuver my opponent. This matters a lot on the battlefront.

Please guide me on how to do this?
