The evolution of VR gaming has been fascinating to watch. Being a tech and gaming lover, I have been looking at how developers have been trying to use VR in different gaming genres. Of course, shooters were the obvious choice for VR gameplay, but developers have done a great job in other genres like adventure and open-world exploration games.
The Quest is the one that opened RTS gaming to VR as soon as it entered the realm of fitness and rhythm games. This move opened new possibilities for immersive experiences.
What's particularly exciting now is seeing how VR enhances existing games rather than just forcing new concepts. Take Powerwash Simulator VR, for instance. It feels so natural in virtual reality that you would think it was designed for VR from the start.
Demeo also showed us how tabletop gaming could be revolutionized by letting friends gather around a virtual table, creating an experience that's both familiar and innovative.
That's why I was pleasantly surprised by Homeworld: Vast Reaches. Despite RTS games being known for their complexity, FarBridge managed to adapt the genre's demanding mechanics to work smoothly with the Quest 3's motion controls, from what I have seen on reviews.
What's more interesting is that this VR adaptation actually improves aspects of battlefield management and strategic planning, showing that sometimes a new perspective can enhance even the most established genres.
The game is currently in development, and the developer says they will release it in late 2024 or early 2025.
