There is little doubt that RTS is seeing a massive resurgence. Games like Stormgate, Godsworn, Zero Space, Age of Mythology and others are doing very well recently. But this does not mean the popularity of RTS games is as high as it used to be, especially at the turn of the millennium.
Who remembers the days of Warcraft 3 or Starcraft when these games were incredibly popular.
So what happened?
One theory I have seen floating around is that the RTS genre got fragmented and people gravitated towards the aspects of the games they like best. Players who like micromanagement moved to MOBAs, those who like city building moved towards games like Frostpunk, and those who love macro-focused games moved to 4X games.
From this argument, we can say RTS has been in competition within its own genre. Do you agree with this sentiment?
