Who has done this? Who has thought about it? What do you feel are the challenges involved? What programming skills are needed? What software and hardware is needed?

You cloud say I done it but nothing better then a flash game.
Depend on the scope and the tools.
You don't necessarily need a programming language to make a game. Look at Mario maker or RPG maker.
Look back at the second answer

My brother and my eldest son did game design in college and my brother went on to university to continue game design when he was younger. He said it was a great course but the amount of work he had to put in and how much he never understood until he spent time watching videos on YouTube to help.

He said it was a great course and he enjoyed learning and working towards being able to develop games but it does take a lot.

My pals and I attempted to design a game once, I was thinking of a story as they were trying to piece together graphics and programming code, as most should realize, it is no small undertaking no matter how small the game is. Needless to say, I'm not really going to try for another game again, just too much work.

Any project that's not just some print. Take time and skills.
I made a skate in dos 12 years ago and it was a struggle ^^

Nope, I'm not bad with Photoshop if that helps but as regards designing and making a game then that's out of the question in that point of view. I mean sounds fun if you know what you are doing off. I rather test the games out hahahaha.

At least there is RPG Maker to help a lot of people who just want to publish something though, makes it easier than coding it from the ground up. Or using an expensive game engine.
