Dawn of War was one those games that was able to bring a certain twist to the strategy games genre. It introduced the features like the possibility to hide behind walls and to build one’s own base. Other games like Company of Heroes and StarCraft series followed this up and made it so much more effective. This is when strategy games start to received a boost in popularity.
