This is a long read and has been a week or so in the creating. Let's consider the influence of Chris Taylor in real-time strategy gaming.


It’s a name synonymous with real-time strategy. Chris Taylor is the visionary game designer responsible for iconic RTS titles. Throughout his career he has redefined game design, creating some of the most influential and revolutionary titles in the genre. Starting his career in 1989, Taylor first gained worldwide acclaim in 1997 as designer and project lead on Cavedog’s Total Annihilation. In 2007 he returned to real-time strategy with the release of Supreme Commander and the standalone expansion Forged Alliance; considered by many to be one of the greatest real-time strategy titles of all time. Despite being seventeen years old, SupCom – as it is know to fans – remains relevant with the popular multiplayer community client, Forged Alliance Forever (FAF).

An influencial person in the gaming world no doubt. But I will always remember him as someone who was heavily criticized for the development of Dungeon Siege III, a game that many claimed strayed too far from the previous releases.
 
Criticised for the same thing regarding Supreme Commander 2.
Well, Supreme Commander 2 fans were right to have him criticised because of how he simplified many of the core mechanics that made the original Supreme Commander unique. It was bad for the game.
 
Its often touted as a great game but a bad sequel. Square Enix demanded simplification and a reduction in scale so that it could be released on Xbox 360 as well as PC.

It was never a good idea switching to Square Enix for them to publish the game because THQ did better with how they published the first game.
 
Correct me if I'm wrong, I thought that it was under the Wargaming’s ownership that Gas Powered Games switched to when they moved to save the company from going bankrupt but Wargaming finally shutdown in 2018..? I didn't follow up on what happened after that.
