Star Wars Why is Darth Vader tied to a machine?

He seems to be on some sort of life support. What is going on? Myself, I'm guessing he is way past the probability of death.

It was the only way to save him after his fight with Obi Wan that left him cut in half and also burnt beyond recognition.
